The ancient Cambrian mountains form the backbone of this green, mountainous country, which has been a stronghold of Celtic culture for about 3000 years. Wales has been incorporated with England since 1535 but retains a strong national identity. Over one-fifth of the people speak Wesh, a Celtic language with a rich poetic tradition. About 60% of the country's 2.8 million population live in the south or extreme northeast. The old coal-based industries that transformed these areas last century have since given way to a service-led economy.

St David's is the smallest cathedral in the British Isles. The 12th century cathedral was a centre of pilgrimage for the shrine of St David the patron saint of Wales.
