Reed Through the Ages

Tom Doig's Book - Reed Through the Ages

A new history of the village of Reed by Tom Doig

The north Hertfordshire village of Reed stands high on the chalk ridge overlooking the Cambridgeshire Fens. For over two thousand years there has been a settlement on the site and this short history traces its development and people.

Collected from the reminiscences of local people, it recalls the
families such as the Bysouths, Whitbys, Hales, Doughtons, Stotens, Knights, Fardells, Collins, Laytons, Drages, Kings, Totts, Farraways, Gilbeys, Lawrences, Hanchetts, Palmers, Camps, Elsoms, Lees, Dellows and many more. For family historians,

Reed through the Ages is a useful source of additional information and village photographs.

Most of the photographs have never previously been published. They show how the village has changed and recall many of the houses and buildings which have now been lost.

Tom Doig is a social historian who has been researching the history of Reed and the surrounding villages/or over 25 years. He lectures for the WEA, U3A, University of Cambridge and Luton Community College and is well known for his radio and television broadcasts and his articles in local and family history publications. Tom is also co-editor of Hertfordshire’s Past the journal of local history and archaeology for the county.   Stoten family in the High Street, Reed
