Hertfordshire Archives & Local Studies
(HALS) is the specialist centre of information on the local
history of Hertfordshire, covering many aspects of life in the
county including the people, the environment, the geography and
history etc.
Based at County Hall in Hertford, HALS comprises the former
Hertfordshire Record Office and the county Local Studies Library,
and offers an integrated service providing archives and local
studies material, including over 6000 archive collections, 30,000
books, 30,000 images, 10,000 maps, and 200 newspaper and
periodical titles.
If you are interested in researching your family history, the history of your house, town or village, or need help with a school local studies project, HALS can help you. There are three parts to the service:
The Archive Reading Room, where visitors consult original documents. These include the records of the County Council, as well as local parish churches, families, estates and businesses.
The Library & Family History Centre where visitors can see printed and published materials. These include books and pamphlets, newspapers and periodicals, directories, theses, maps, photographs, a range of CD-ROMs and the Internet. plus a range of resources (mostly on microfilm or fiche) to help you research your family tree.
