FHS of Martin
Society Area Representatives
Derbyshire
| The Derbyshire
area appears to have few FHS of Martin members at present
though there are quite a few Martins or persons
researching the name belonging to other Family History
Societies in Derbyshire or adjoining counties.
I have been able to help some of these with their research, in most cases using the 'Mormon' Family Search program, even for people who do have an Internet connection as a fresh look at names sometimes helps but quite a few people did not know of its existence. I am building up a database of all the family trees sent to me so that eventually I may be able to cross link any enquiry I get with others who may be researching the same line in Derbyshire. |

Regrettably my
own Martin research is based in the London and the
Bedfordshire/Northamptonshire areas as my parents only
came to live in this area some 30 years ago. What I need is for anyone with Martin interests in Derbyshire to send me some brief details of their lines of research but I must clearly state that any information sent to me is to be freely available to pass on to others to help with their research. I have a copy of the book - 'Memorial Inscriptions for the Parish Church of Chapel en le Frith - St Thomas Becket' - and will look up any names sent to me (26 Martins listed), there are also two other churches with burial plots (Methodist & Independent Chapel) in the town but no listing of Inscriptions for them. I can look for grave stones there if anyone is fairly certain of a burial in either but many of the inscriptions are now unreadable. |

| Chapel
en le Frith is an old Market Town known as the Capital of
the Peak on the edge of the Peak District National Park.
This National Park covers the White Peak which is
mainly limestone rock and the Dark Peak which is
gritstone and peat moorlands. |
| The
weather can be very changeable and each winter the local
mountain rescue groups have to help walkers who venture
out on a fine day in unsuitable clothing as the weather
can change to wet and very cold in a very short time
- we even had snow one June day a few years ago!
Buxton is the nearest large town, a well known Spa and tourist area, home of Buxton Spring Water though you can get your very own well water from the St Anne's Well in the town centre free of charge.Derby University is moving into the town during shortly and it will become much busier. Not to be missed: the restored Opera House, Pooles Cavern and a little further away the world famous Blue John Mines, mined it is said, from Roman times. |

| The
semi-precious Blue John stone is
made into some beautiful jewellery, on sale in Castleton. Chatsworth House, home of the Duke & Duchess of Devonshire, is well worth a visit, especially as they both do so much for organisations and charities in this area. The only Family History society in the county that I know of, is the Derby FHS with a office in Derby. My address is 'The Pines', 23a Eccles Rd, Chapel en le Frith, High Peak, Derbyshire. SK23 9RP
